In response to the cult post I looked into polygamist cultures. Polygamists believe that the more wives they acquire the closer they become to go god. Polygamist men will marry girls as soon as they are able to have children. Sometimes this means girls are “chosen” for marriage as young as 14 years old. They do not believe in any kind of birth control but rather in having as many kids as they can. Some polygamist ranches order ovulation cycle test kits in bulk so that the men can know when they have the highest chance of getting their wives pregnant. One polygamist leader Warren Jeffs had 58 wives and over 400 children before he was arrested for sexual abuse of a minor. Because these polygamist men think that they have to marry as many women as possible, they start to see any other men as competition. In some cases boys were exiled from their community at very young ages because the older men saw them as competition (http://www.foxnews.com/video/index.html).

Some of these things you've written are true about some polygamists, but a lot of it is stereotyping or completely false (what community ordered ovulation kits???) based on sensational stories in the media. Check out some information that is more factual. Go to www.principlevoices.org and look at our FAQs page and read about the diversity of the various polygamous groups/communities, but understand that our background is fundamentalist Mormon based polygamy and there are other polygamy practicing groups of people who are Christian based or non-religion based. You can also find the Utah Safety Net's Primer online through the Attorney General's office website, at: http://attorneygeneral.utah.gov/cmsdocuments/The_Primer.pdf. The Primer is another source that explains the different polygamous groups and some of their beliefs, but even without a community, people are going to interpret and apply beliefs into practice in different ways.
