Cultures and Traditions of Islamic Women

All over the world there are different sets of traditions for men and women. Like Chinese woman and their foot binding, Saudi Arabia also has some traditions for their woman. Although the Chinese hold their men to a higher standard than woman, in Saudi Arabia it is a lot more out of hand and cruel. The chinese hold their woman to a beautiful standard and want them to be petite pretty much everywhere. In Saudi Arabia the men hold their woman to be practically nothing. Although 70% of woman are enrolled in a University, only about 5% make up the workforce (lowest in the world). According to "Sharia", the body of Islamic religious laws, a woman's place is to be at home taking care of her husband and family. Saudi Arabian woman live most restricted segregated lives, even from their spouse. Most houses have two entrances in their home, one for the woman and one for the men. Women are also segregated in the justice system and may only testify if they are muslim and it is a personal matter that did not occur in the sight of a man. After the woman gives her testimony it is taken as a presumption and not a fact. This is a list of reasons women are forbidden to testify unless they meet the circumstances above. 

Women are much more emotional than men and will, as a result of their emotions, distort their testimony.

Women do not participate in public life, so they will not be capable of understanding what they observe.

Women are dominated completely by men, who by the grace of God are deemed superior; therefore, women will give testimony according to what the last man told them.

Women are forgetful, and their testimony cannot be considered reliable.

These laws have led to unfair cases and sentencings of the wrong individual. An example I found on this same website was a woman who was the victim of a gang rape. Her testimony was treated as a presumption while the men's were treated as a fact. The woman was sentenced to 6 months in jail and 200 lashes for violoation laws on segregation of sexes.
