It's amazing how radically different and alien Middle Eastern ideology is compared to Western or Eastern views. Apparently Afghan men are unhappy with only having the right to beat and murder their wife or female relatives, now they want the right to starve them if they don't have sex with them on demand. The fact that some Shiite women actually signed a petition FOR the law is just mind-boggling...and also suspect for possible coercion. Besides just starving the law also gives guardianship of all children to the father or grandfather and requires permission from a woman's husband to allow her to hold a job.
What I'm wondering is, do Americans and Europeans have the right to try and change the way a society works? Muslim countries are fundamentally different from non-Muslim countries in ideology and most seem to be stuck culturally in the 7th century. Is it wrong to starve another human being for not meeting sexual demands? Yes. Is it wrong to behead or kill a daughter or wife because they were rape victims? Hell yes. An Ideology that embraces murder and torture is wrong no matter how you slice it.
The bad thing is, this kind of misogynistic treatment of women in the Middle East has been going on for centuries, and judging from the rallying men that support laws like the one in the article, it may go on for centuries to come unless the developed countries of the world bring more pressure upon them. The last thing anyone needs is another nation like Iran.
