After reading Andrea’s post and how she went to a Youth Gathering, it made me think of Jesus Camp. This past summer, I watched a show about Jesus Camp. It interested me mostly because it followed a family from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, which is a suburb of my hometown, Kansas City. It also shocked me on how crazy these families were who attended the camp. The camp is shut down now, but it used to take place in the summer. It was a camp for children and they would go to learn more about Christ and "take back America for Christ." The camp is run by Becky Fischer and she says that children needed to come to the camp to purify themselves in order to be part of the "army of God."
I have attached a YouTube video of highlights from the documentary film “Jesus Camp.” Every time I watch it, I get chills because I can’t believe how the kids react to the teachings of Fischer. The title of the YouTube video is “Brain Washing” and I believe that Jesus Camp is exactly that. In the video, it shows children crying because Fischer told them that they were hypocrites. She called them that because she claims that even though they may attend church weekly, they are different people at school. They may say bad words or make fun of people. This video makes me feel bad for the children and I don’t understand why their parents would send them to a camp like this. I personally think these families are going overboard by teaching their children about Christ this way. It is a little extreme.
